How to be liked by the Turkish society? A question that spring to the minds of students, especially before coming to study.
I have completed one year in Istanbul and got the answers to these questions.
Is the Turkish language essential if I want to settle in Turkey?
Learning the language is vital in Turkey, since the Turkish society are proud of their language, and few of them speak a second language such as English.
You must learn the Turkish language while living in Istanbul so that you can adapt with the Turkish society. This will be easy for you because you interact with Turkish people often. Also, it is important to learn the key terms before moving to the country which facilitates communication.
Can I practice my religious beliefs freely in Turkey?
Sure, you can. No one prevents you from these matters in particular, because Turkey is likewise a Muslim country and we have similar religious beliefs. This allows me to perform my spiritual beliefs without obstruction.
Is there racial and national origin discrimination?
Recently, a lot of news is spreading about the Turkish society and their attitude toward Arabs. However, from my point of view, Turks are patriotic and they may have an attitude toward foreigners for several causes.
One of these is passing over their lines. For example, speaking aloud in transport and disrespecting their laws and rules. Those situations happen everywhere, not just in Turkey.
For example: I have a friend studying in Canada, and he faces similar situations.
Each society has its own social boundaries, and when they are crossed, a reaction will occur. We must take into consideration that we live here as guests and students. As a guest in a foreign country, I should behave well without crossing those lines in order to be liked by the Turkish society.
As for inside the university campus, things are different. Most of us are foreign students, we all accept each other, and the teaching staff is cooperative a lot since most of those studying at the university are Arab students or foreigners in general.
Have I been able to make Turkish friends? Were there different ways of thinking?
Yes, I have been able to make Turkish friends, and my experience was positive. I had to know them through university and there were many of them who agreed with my views. Contrary, there were those who had other ways of thinking, but I was the one that puts boundaries.
What are the boundaries that you shouldn’t cross in Turkey?
Discussing political topics, and also the history of the country. You will engage with them in an endless argument, each with his point of view, and his beliefs, too. It is their country, so you must respect what they say, regardless of your point of view or what you have gained from studying their history or our shared history.
What are the similarities and differences between Arabs and Turks?
We, Arabs, have the concept of hospitality and honoring the guest. Turkish people share with us the same value, but with different customs and traditions. In particular, drinking tea at any time is, for the Turkish people, a significant part of their culture.
Are there things you learned that helped you be liked by Turkish society?
Yes sure,
1- To learn the Turkish language so that you can communicate with people. Turkish society admire those who try to speak their language.
2- To respect old people.
3- Commitment to the laws and rules of the country.
Here I have summed up my experience. I hope I answered the questions of students coming to study in Turkey.
