Student Ali Abdel Khaleq talks about Arabs in Turkey. What are their advantages? Where are they located? What brings them together? How many have they become? He says:
Recently, the number of Arabs in Turkey has increased, and it is believed that there are almost 4 million Arabs in Turkey.
From my point of view, I think it is because Turkey is a Muslim country with a religious culture similar to ours, as Arabs. Also, it is a great European country. Any place I visit has minimum one Arab, specifically here in Istanbul.
Since I studied in Arab schools in Turkey, I met many Arabs and almost all nationalities. The most nationality I meet here is the Syrian nationality, followed by Iraqi, Palestinian, Algerian, Moroccan, Jordanian, Lebanese, and also Egyptian nationality.
Where do Arabs live in Turkey?
Here in Istanbul, there are places where Arabs reside, such as the Fatih, Sirinevler, and Basaksehir areas.
Also, there are plenty of Arab restaurants and shops, mainly Syrian restaurants. Sometimes I find Arab products that are available at large commercial centers, that I don’t find in my country. Besides, I got to try delicious foods from different Arab countries and they became my favorites.
Clubs and organizations for Arabs in Turkey
One of the famous pages that the Arabs community follows on Facebook is the Guzel page. It comprises reliable news and upcoming events in Istanbul.
There are Arab cultural clubs and organizations that care about talents in Turkey and also set up fun activities for students. Besides, these groups benefit students in developing relationships and meeting Arabs like them, of various nationalities.
You can find many Arab libraries in different areas of Turkey that include Arabic books. These places helps students in preparing research papers for their universities as well.
Job opportunities for Arabs in Turkey
There are some Arab companies that hire Arabs in Turkey in particular, in the translation sector, and other fields, but especially in marketing. Since Istanbul is a leading commercial city, this requires the Arab student to have prior experience and knowledge in the market. If you need to do training in your field of specialization, these companies could help you too.
Turkish perspectives regarding Arabs
I would like to shed the light on an important issue. Recently, voices have been raised calling for eliminating Arabic signs from the streets. Also, we saw debates in the media concerning the rising number of Arabs in Turkey.
Yes, there are people, in Istanbul especially, who find the vast number of Arabs in Turkey annoying. But there are several reasons for this discomfort that may take a long time to explain. On contrary, it is interesting that there are good people whom we deal with on the street, on university campuses, in health centers, and in government departments, and we only see good in them.
Any people, whatever they are, when they see other nationalities increasing in their state, will show the same reaction.
Finally, I see that discrimination represents an individual or a group of people, not an entire society.
