Anas Dakkak talked to Studykoy about the problems faced by a student in Türkiye. He wants new students to learn from him, so they can prepare themselves before coming to the country.
Learning a new language
He says that the very first problem you will encounter is the language barrier. However, the good thing is that the Turkish language is easy to learn. Like all languages, it can take years to learn and master them. For example, if anyone wants something from a store or a place of government interests, everything requires you to at least be able to express yourself up to some extent.”
Choosing Housing
He further adds that the housing must be closer to your university area, and you should book the house before coming to the country. Students should also be aware of any laws related to rental agreements. You can be assured that Turkish law supports the tenant and not the owner. Just pay the rent on time and don’t disturb the neighbors, and you will be fine.
Safety
He says, “In terms of safety and not being exposed to any situation such as theft, stay away from touristic places as Istanbul is an international city, and you can find all kinds of people here. Since Istanbul is also famous for its congestion, especially traffic, you must deal with this issue so as not to waste a lot of time on the buses and to go to your lectures and exams on time. To do this, you should choose housing closer to your university. Although Istanbul is a country famous for its traffic, there are mobile applications that make it easy for you to find the fastest means of transportation to reach your destination.”
Food
Regarding Turkish food, he says the cuisine is somewhat very different as there are some dishes that he did not try before. He says, “Now, I cannot stop eating them, such as Midye (mussels), Döner, and Köfte.” This can be a problem faced by students in Türkiye if they are not used to different cuisines and cultures.
Making new friends
It is not hard to make friends in the university, as you can always find people with whom your mindsets match. Give yourself time and you will adjust. In the end, new student always has fears that they are alone in a new country, so these questions always arise: “Will I be able to adapt? Will I achieve the goal for which I came?”
Getting Homesick
During this journey, you will miss your family and go through many problems. However, you should take the right decisions in it. It is very easy to feel homesick, but over time you will get used to it and become stronger and eventually achieve what you want.
